We just lost a deal to a competitor who had no product.

Here’s what happened:

A prospect we’d been nurturing for 6 weeks went dark. I followed up. No reply. Then I saw their CEO post on LinkedIn: "Thrilled to partner with [Competitor] to solve [problem]."

I checked Competitor’s product. It doesn’t exist yet. It’s a landing page with a waitlist.

But they had something we didn’t: a founder who posted every day about the problem. Not about features. About the pain. About why the old way is broken.

That founder built trust before they built software.

Meanwhile, I was heads-down building. No posts. No presence. Just a better product that nobody knew about.

Lesson learned: In B2B SaaS, trust compounds faster than features. If you’re not telling your story while you build, someone else will tell theirs while they fake it.

We’re changing our approach now. Starting with this post.

What’s your biggest lesson from losing a deal you thought you had locked?
